Just for Fun

To celebrate the start of this too-short season,  this morning — before the rains came —I left any and all “oldest daughter” responsibilities behind and set off into the world beyond my city’s streets.   To follow, so to speak, in the footsteps of hikers and authors Cheryl Strayed, Bill Bryson,  and Grandma Gatewood.

My first day on the trail

Not the Pacific Crest Trail or the Appalachian, but an official trail nevertheless.

Over stoned pathways and dirt paths, I went.

I didn’t care how many steps I took or how fast I went. I simply walked.  Past backpacking hikers and creeks sitters.

Seeing monsters in downed trees

 and deserted shacks.

Stopping to keep company with a stoic gull resting above a shimmering inlet before soaring into a momentarily blue sky.

Then onto a bridge with the front range of the Rocky Mountains just beyond for another day.

At the end of the day, with apologies to Irving Berlin, it’s been a lovely day today.  And I hope whatever you’ve had to do, you’ve found a lovely place to do it in.   Happy First Day of Summer!
