Happy different-kind-of 4th of July

 

On my early morning walk, after passing a giggling creek, I  ran across a wooden post and box off to the side of the trail.  I was struck by the generous spirit of the gardener wanting to freely share what he/she had more than enough of.  But it wasn’t simply the message that caught my eye.  It was also the hand-lettered word describing the contents of the bucket.  A perfect word for today.

the 244th birthday of the founding of our nation and

Remember

the 56 signers to the Declaration of Independence who “For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.” 

  • Five of those signers were captured by the British as traitors and  tortured before they died.
  • Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
  • Nine fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
  • Three died financially ruined, in poverty, rags or bankruptcy. 

Why they did what they did

Straight from the Declaration of Independence–

The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.”

All the above makes me thankful and proud to be an American.
